TITLE: THE USE OF SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES (SNSs) BY THE UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF KUK, HARYANA
ABSTRACT: Purpose- The purpose of the present study is to describe the use of Social Networking Sites (SNSs) by the Undergraduate students of the University College of K.U.K., Haryana.
Design/methodology/approach- A survey was conducted to collect data from a total of 90 under- graduates students of Science (Medical/Non-Medical) and Non-Science (Arts, Commerce) of the University College of K.U.K.
Findings-The paper reveals that male users have more awareness about the usage of SNSs and are daily users as compare to the female respondents. Majority of the male users have Facebook profiles whereas female users give preference to whatsapp. Findings also reveals that maximum female users from Arts and Commerce streams are using SNSs at their home and male users are more from the Science stream. Male users top the table in accepting SNSs as a useful tool for the better exchange of ideas. Maximum female users are of the opinion that SNSs have causes negative impact and both the male and female users are of the views of leveling some sort of restrictions on the use of the SNSs and male users are facing more problems in using SNSs in comparison with the female users.
Research limitations/implications- This study involved a single academic institution, namely University College of K.U.K. Therefore its findings, conclusions and recommendations may not be applicable and reasonable to be generalized on all the University colleges of Haryana.
Social implication- This paper provides a valuable insight into the usage of SNSs by an important group of users’ i.e. undergraduate students.
Originality- This study is the first one of its kind conducted about the use of SNSs by the undergraduate’s students and a comparison is done between the male and female students of the University College of K.U.K.in the state of Haryana to investigate more specific and important information regarding the use, awareness and opinion about the SNSs and its related topics.
